Lupita Nyong’o, Alexander England, and Josh Gad protect a group of kindergarteners from zombies in the U.S. red band trailer for Little Monsters. Written and directed by Abe Forsythe (Down Under) and produced by Keith Calder and Jess Wu Calder (for Snoot Entertainment), Little Monsters pits a recently washed-up musician (England), a loud-mouthed children’s television personality (Gad), and an extra-chipper teacher (Nyong’o) against a horde of brain-munching monsters, after an experiment-gone-wrong at a military base raises the dead. It bowed at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and was picked up by Neon and Hulu shortly thereafter.
Reviews have been generally positive so far, with Little Monsters drawing comparisons to Peter Jackson’s early splatter horror-comedy films (a la Dead Alive), as well as more recent zombie genre hybrids like Shaun of the Dead. It’s set to make its debut on Hulu in October, and kicked off its marketing with an international trailer back in July. Now, the movie’s official U.S. preview has been unveiled.

By and large, this trailer is more geared towards generating hype for Little Monsters than revealing anything new, as far as the movie’s plot is concerned. It only makes sense, though; thanks to the positive early word of mouth, the preview has plenty of critic pull-quotes to choose from and include here (which it does). Nyong’o is also an important selling point for the film, if only because the Oscar-winner is better known for prestigious dramas like 12 Years a Slave or high-minded commercial fare like Black Panther and Us. Little Monsters, on the other hand, seems pretty unapologetic about being a tongue in cheek B-movie, which gives Nyong’o the chance to ham it up and be ridiculous in ways that she normally isn’t onscreen.
Little Monsters becomes available on Hulu starting Friday, October 11.
