Little Women 2 could happen in the near future should the first movie be successful, and there’s already a story ready to tell. In December 2019, actress-turned-filmmaker Greta Gerwig released her adaption of the classic Louisa May Alcott novel, and provideed a timely spin on the original story. Now that Little Women has earned rave reviews, much like Gerwig’s solo feature directorial debut Lady Bird, a sequel appears to be a logical next step.

Little Women features an ensemble cast starring Saoirse Ronan (Jo March), Emma Watson (Meg March), Florence Pugh (Amy March), Eliza Scanlen (Beth March), Laura Dern (Marmee March, and Timothée Chalamet as Theodore “Laurie” Laurence. The film aligns with Alcott’s narrative as the March women try to find their way in life while seeking the ideal romantic partners. For the fiercely-independent Jo, she’s simply not ready to settle down for practical reasons. Instead, she pursues her creative goals while others focus on securing a happy future in Massachusetts.

In Gerwig’s version of Little Women, she alters the storyline with a final act conversation between Jo and her book publisher. Rather than being submissive in terms of payment, Jo instead negotiates a better financial deal. She essentially fights for her book rather than love; a spin of romantic comedy tropes. Little Women ends with a sequence that’s seemingly from Jo’s perspective, as opposed to Walcott’s real life conclusion depicted in the novel. Here’s what to expect for Little Women 2, or what it most likely will be called, Little Men.

Little Women Is The Start Of A Book Trilogy

In 1868, Walcott published the first part of Little Women and then released the second part the following year. By 1871, Walcott published a follow-up, Little Men, which features numerous characters from Little Women, and she later released a third and final installment of the Little Women trilogy, Jo’s Boys, in 1886. Two years later, Walcott passed away at age 55.

What Is The Story Of Little Men?

Little Men takes place over six months at Plumfield Estate School. Jo and Friedrich Bhaer, now the parents of two children, work as teachers and keep a loose schedule for the students. Whereas Little Women is primarily about the March sisters, Little Men shows how Jo influences a new generation of Massachusetts residents, and how they intellectually develop in a relatively short amount of time. Little Men was last adapted for the big screen in 1940. A Canadian TV series adaption aired in 1998.

Little Women 2 Release Date: When Could Little Men Release?

As of now, Little Men isn’t being developed. If Little Women is a huge commercial success, however, it’s certainly possible that a sequel will indeed be produced in the near future. After all, Little Men would presumably star the aforementioned Ronan as Jo March, and it was Ronan who starred in Gerwig’s 2017 hit Lady Bird.

Considering Gerwig’s indie background in filmmaking, she wouldn’t exactly need a blockbuster budget for Little Men. But if a Little Women sequel does happen, it seemingly won’t be Gerwig’s next feature. She’s currently attached to direct Barbie starring Margot Robbie, a film that was co-written by Gerwig’s partner, Noah Baumbach. If that film doesn’t release for a couple more years, Little Men probably wouldn’t release until approximately 2023 or 2024.
