Live-action TV shows based on the Marvel characters that Sony has the film rights for are currently in the works. Sony has had a lot of recent success with its Marvel properties. This success includes Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, which was a hit with fans. That film also beat out Disney and other studios to bring home the statue for Best Animated Feature at the 2019 Academy Awards.
However, Sony also had some success with its live-action Venom film starring Tom Hardy. Although critics mostly panned the movie, it garnered enough interest at the box office to convince Sony to produce a sequel with Andy Serkis directing. The studio also has a live-action Morbius the Living Vampire in production, starring Jared Leto. Sony even felt confident enough to share the character of Spider-Man with Marvel, allowing him to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s true that Disney’s Marvel projects, particularly Spider-Man, tend to get a lot of attention. However, Sony still has quite a few exclusive Marvel characters left in its pocket to bring to movies and TV.
Into The Spider-Verse executive producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller recently signed a five-year deal with Sony Pictures to create original TV shows for the studio. That deal includes series based on Sony’s Marvel properties. According to Deadline, Miller spoke at the Television Critics Association summer press tour about the live-action shows that are currently in the works. He said:
Although Sony is reportedly considering creating spin-off TV shows revolving around characters from Into The Spider-Verse, Miller didn’t confirm or deny that such projects were in the works. However, he did stress that he and Lord wanted to do something different with these new shows. Because of that, though, Miller admitted it might take a while before those projects begin production. He also did not confirm where those projects might eventually land, either on Netflix or elsewhere.
“We are developing a handful of live-action shows using Sony’s Marvel characters, of which there are like 900 characters. We’re figuring out a way to develop the shows so that each are their own unique experience but are also related.”
Lord and Miller are certainly competent enough to handle Sony’s Marvel properties. The two men have seen success together since they directed 2009’s Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. They are also responsible for both 21 Jump Street movies and helped launch the LEGO cinematic universe. Sony still owns the rights to many fan-favorite Marvel characters, including those from Spider-Man comics. Live-action shows are an excellent way to give comic book fans what they want. Into The Spider-Verse was definitive proof that Sony still had some viable cards up its sleeve with its Marvel properties.
