Original Lizzie McGuire actor Adam Lamberg is confirmed to be returning as Gordo in the upcoming Disney+ reboot starring Hilary Duff. Premiering in 2001, Lizzie McGuire is a Disney Channel original series that ran for two seasons - a total of 65 episodes - before ending in 2004. The series was such a success that The Lizzie McGuire Movie hit theaters in 2003 and the whole franchise launched Duff’s career to new heights. Now with the recent launch of Disney’s streaming service Disney+, the Mouse House has a whole slate of nostalgia programming planned, including a Lizzie McGuire sequel series reviving the beloved show.
At D23 over the summer, Disney confirmed the Lizzie McGuire reboot was in production for Disney+, with the show continuing to follow Lizzie (Duff), now as an almost-30-year-old interior designer assistant living in New York City. It was later confirmed that more original cast members of Lizzie McGuire would return, including those who play the titular character’s family: Hallie Todd, Robert Carradine, and Jake Thomas as Lizzie’s mom Jo, her father same Sam and her younger brother Matt, respectively. Now, another original cast member is set to return.
Today, Disney+ confirmed original series star Adam Lamberg will reprise his role as David “Gordo” Gordon, one of Lizzie’s childhood friends. Duff and Lamberg made the announcement themselves in a new video, while Disney+ additionally unveiled a photo of the actors together for the new Lizzie McGuire series. Check both out below.
In the original TV show, Gordo was interested in filmmaking and often his wry comments were used as comedic relief. On Lamberg’s return for the Lizzie McGuire reboot, Duff said: “Gordo was an essential piece of the puzzle to what made the original Lizzie McGuire so authentic and beloved. I couldn’t imagine the series without him. I can’t wait for fans to see what he’s up to 15 years later and how he fits into Lizzie’s adult world.” With Lamberg officially returning, the only remaining original main cast member not confirmed is Lalaine as Lizzie’s best friend Miranda Sanchez - but perhaps that announcement will be made before filming concludes. The Disney+ Lizzie McGuire series started production last month and is still filming.
Fans of the original Lizzie McGuire show will no doubt be pleased to see Lamberg back as Gordo, considering how integral the character was to Lizzie’s coming-of-age story. It will be interesting to see whether Gordo followed his passion for filmmaking and turned it into a career or if he went in a different direction. Plus, fans are no doubt curious to see how Gordo and Lizzie’s friendship has evolved since they were in middle school.
There are no doubt fans of Lizzie McGuire who may be put off by Disney reviving the series, considering the spotty track record of revivals and reboots in Hollywood as a late. However, it seems Duff and everyone involved in the sequel series are determined to give original fans a new experience. After all, the Disney+ Lizzie McGuire sequel series picks up 15 years later and follows the character as she’s dealing with adulthood, which is a premise fans of the original show will be able to identify with. Whether the Lizzie McGuire reboot is a success remains to be seen, but it’s still good to see Gordo back.
