Throughout the X-Men comic books, Jean Grey is caught in a love triangle between Scott Summers/Cyclops and Logan/Wolverine. She marries Scott, but both she and Logan have a deep and powerful attraction to each other. It’s sort of a classic story - a woman caught between a kind and handsome leader, and a bad boy. Throw in their mutant powers, and Jean Grey’s struggle with the phoenix, and it gets a little more complicated. Still, Logan and Jean have a beautiful unrequited love story.

And that story has carried over into the X-Men films. Logan’s (Hugh Jackman) attraction to Jean (Famke Janssen) was pretty obvious in the first film especially, he didn’t even try to hide it from her or Scott (James Marsden). But as usually happens in their story, she remained loyal to Scott. Their connection is so strong that as a teenager she’s even able to partially control him in X-Men: Apocalypse when he goes berserk and slaughters nearly everyone he sees. Everyone but Jean and her friends. The tension caused by Logan and Jean’s feelings for each other lead to many humorous moments between Logan and Scott in the movies. As for Logan and Jean themselves, it gave them a deep and powerful friendship.

Because of their history and relationship, Jean’s absence from Logan is felt. She’s hardly the only X-Man who is no longer there, but she’s the one who always meant the most to him. It’s something that was touched on in a deleted scene, which director James Mangold described to Empire:

Wolverine did kill Jean in X-Men: The Last Stand. However, when Logan changed the timeline in Days of Future Past that event was erased. Indicating that Logan had to kill her yet again, at another point in time. It seems like no matter what, Jean will be taken over by the phoenix and Logan will have to kill her.

“I sketched out different conversations for that dinner scene and one of them went to a much darker place. Mrs Munson asks Logan if he’s married, and Charles says he was – but he killed her. Of course, he wasn’t really married, but what that then spawns is Charles waxing poetic about Jean Grey, and it’s a really cool moment. Both Hugh and Patrick were amazing. The problem was, it created an incredibly powerful lead brick in the middle of the only moment in the movie where there was a breather. Even I, with my taste for the dark, felt that it was one too many. Things go pretty shitty within seconds after that. I think [the deleted scene] will make it to the Blu-ray.”

While that part of their conversation would have had a huge effect on the tone, it would be nice to see it as a deleted scene. So hopefully, as Mangold teases, that does come to pass once Logan hits Blu-ray. But, with Jackman’s last turn as Wolverine having just been released in theaters, it will be a while before the film is released on Blu-ray.
