Twentieth Century Fox’s mutant cinematic universe has existed in some form or another since Bryan Singer’s X-Men hit theaters in 2000. Since then, the world has seen spinoffs following fan-favorite characters Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) and Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds), as well as a prequel trilogy that completely rewrote the continuity of the original films. Now, Fox has a number of X-Men-related properties in development, but the next to hit theaters is Logan - the final appearance of Jackman as Wolverine, as directed by James Mangold (The Wolverine).
With Logan set to hit theaters tomorrow, buzz surrounding Jackman and Mangold’s film is at an all-time high. So far, the majority of reviews are positive, with Logan being Certified Fresh by Rotten Tomatoes, but one aspect certain comic book fans may be disappointed by is the movie’s lack of post-credits scene - which has become a tradition of Fox’s mutant universe as well as other superhero cinematic worlds. That said, it was reported in December Reynolds filmed a scene as Deadpool for Logan, which was recently confirmed to be a pre-movie teaser for Deadpool 2. Now, a new report has more details about the teaser.
/Film is reporting Deadpool 2 director David Leitch did helm a scene as a promotion for the Merc with a Mouth’s upcoming sequel. It will feature Reynolds suited up as Deadpool in a short scene - not a trailer - that will screen in theaters prior to Logan. Additionally, as previously rumored, Stan Lee may have a cameo in the scene. Read on for the full breakdown of the teaser.
/Film reports that they received details about the teaser from two separate sources, and their respective breakdowns align for the most part. The scene starts off with Reynolds as Wade Wilson - wearing a hooded sweatshirt to cover his scarred face and listening to “Call Me Angel” (from Deadpool) - walking past an alley in which a mugging is taking place. Wilson runs for a telephone booth, with John Williams’ classic Superman theme playing, but struggles to actually change into his Deadpool outfit. According to the sources, the camera holds on Reynolds for a whole minute as he struggles, while the mugging concludes off screen with a gunshot.
Then, Deadpool runs to the rescue in heroic slow motion only to find the victim of the mugging dead in the alley with the other man having run off. With no one left to save, Wade begins running his mouth - as fans would expect from the Merc with a Mouth - while picking through the dead man’s grocery bags, then leaving the alley. One of /Film’s sources say Stan Lee provides a cameo at this point, asking Deadpool, “Hey, aren’t you Ryan Gosling?” - though it was not confirmed by their second source. The teaser ends with text on screen previewing the sequel: “Deadpool…coming…not soon enough.”
Of course, based on this breakdown and Jackman’s comments about Logan being his last turn as the clawed hero he’s played since 2000, it’s official that Reynold’s Deadpool and Jackman’s Wolverine will never appear on screen together - despite many fans holding out hope it would happen in this pre-movie teaser. That said, the scene directed by Leitch will undoubtedly provide fans with an idea of what they can expect from him after taking the reigns from Tim Miller, who helmed Deadpool. Plus, given the teaser breakdown, it’s clear the scene will follow perfectly in the tone of the first movie, and hopefully help to tide fans over until Deadpool 2 hits theaters.
Update: the full Deadpool 2 teaser has now been made available online.
