Logic pays homage to the one and only “The One” in his 2019 track “Keanu Reeves.” Keanu Reeves may not be as acclaimed as similar actors of his generation, but there’s no denying his iconic status. After making an impression with roles in movies like River’s Edge, Reeves would first breakthrough with 1989’s Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. He played teen airhead Ted ‘’Theodore’’ Logan in the time-travel comedy, and he would follow up with sequel Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey and cult classic Point Break.
While he was utterly miscast in Bram Stroker’s Dracula, Keanu had a mostly strong showing in the 1990s. Speed was a huge success in 1994 - and he wisely dodged returning for Speed 2: Cruise Control - and The Devil’s Advocate is one of his most underrated roles. Of course, The Matrix would become a defining film for both Reeves and cinema itself, and instantly became a sci-fi classic. The 2000s would prove to be a mixed showing, with The Matrix sequels being successful but leaving audiences and critics disappointed. Constantine was scorned by fans of the source material for its various changes but has since become a cult favorite, while he was great in Richard Linklater’s trippy animated film A Scanner Darkly.
Following a string of duds like 47 Ronin, Reeves leading man career slowed down somewhat, which the star himself has admitted. That all changed thanks to the surprise success of 2014’s John Wick. This action thriller sees a mystical hitman come out of retirement when his dog is killed during a home invasion, and it was praised for Reeves’ performance, slick action, and cool worldbuilding. The star returned for two sequels, with another one in the pipe, and it feels like he’s never been more popular. This means it was a good time for rapper Logic to pay loving ode to the star with his track “Keanu Reeves.”
Logic’s “Keanu Reeves” is technically more about the rapper’s growing fame, firing back against his critics, and talking about his own personal growth. That said, the opening lyrics “I’m the one, b****, I am the one, like Keanu Reeves/Get it done, yeah I get it done, no blood on the leaves,” obviously nod in the actor’s direction. He’s basically embodying the Keanu spirit of getting things done as good old Neo ir John Wick do - but with much less bloodshed.
Keanu’s comeback since John Wick has been delightful to witness, and not only will he return for the upcoming Bill & Ted Face The Music, he’ll appear in video game Cyberpunk 2077 and The Matrix 4. It’s a good time to be a fan, as Logic’s “Keanu Reeves” attests to.
