Marvel’s upcoming Disney+ series Loki just potentially got a lot more exciting: the show is reportedly introducing Sera, who would be the MCU’s first transgender character. The news comes soon after the start of pre-production on Loki. The show, which is set to debut in spring of 2021, will reunite viewers with Tom Hiddleston’s popular Thor villain Loki. Quite a bit of information has come out since the series was first announced.
For one, Loki will get around the title character’s death in Avengers: Infinity War by following a different version of the character than the one who passed away. The show will instead focus on the Loki who escaped when the Avengers traveled back in time in Avengers: Endgame. A behind-the-scenes Loki tease shared on Twitter also suggests that the show may return to the era of the first Avengers movie. Additionally, it was revealed late last year that Sophia Di Martino had joined the show’s cast, perhaps as Verity Willis.
According to a new report by The Illuminerdi, Marvel plans on introducing the comics character Sera in the first season of Loki. This would make her the first transgender character to appear in the MCU in a major role. In the comics, Sera is an Anchorite, or wingless Angel of Heven, and the only one who identifies as female. She’s married to Angela, who is Loki’s adoptive sister and Thor’s half-sister in the comics, thus explaining the connection to the Loki series. Sera is reportedly set to be a “major supporting character” who could potentially appear in MCU movies in addition to the show. Over the summer, Geeks Worldwide broke the news that Marvel was casting a transgender character, speculating that it could be Sera.
The news about Marvel’s first transgender character comes just weeks after Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige walked back comments about the matter. Earlier this month, he was asked on a panel about including transgender characters in upcoming MCU movies, to which he responded, “Yes, absolutely, yes. And very soon, in a movie we’re shooting right now.” Soon after, Feige clarified that he was referring to LGBTQ characters in general, rather than transgender characters specifically.
This Loki announcement is the latest development in a recent push by Marvel to include more diversity and representation in the MCU. Fans have been looking forward to the upcoming solo Black Widow movie since well before it was announced. They already came out in droves for Captain Marvel, to the point that Captain Marvel 2 has already been announced. Additionally, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will come out next year, the first Marvel movie with an almost entirely Asian cast. With this additional news about Sera on Loki, it’s clear Marvel is eager to make its TV shows and movies finally reflect the real world.
