The synopsis for Loki has been revealed, confirming the setting and story details for the show. Loki may have been a villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but he is no doubt one of the most recognizable characters in the franchise. Tom Hiddleston has appeared as Loki in six of the MCU movies, starting with Thor back in 2011. The character is immensely popular with fans, and now he is getting his own TV show on Disney+.
The Loki TV series was made public near the end of 2018, around the same time that the other Marvel spin-off shows were announced. The series will run for a total of six episodes, all of which will be directed by Sex Education director Kate Herron. Loki will not resurrect the version of the character that died in Avengers: Infinity War, but rather star the alternate reality version that escaped custody in Avengers: Endgame. Hiddleston will of course be the star of the show; however, Sophia Di Martino has been cast as well (possibly as the female Loki). Owen Wilson is also rumored to have a major role in the project. Fans have been mostly speculating about the show’s synopsis, but now it’s been revealed.
In an official statement, Disney revealed, “In Marvel Studios’ “Loki,” the mercurial villain Loki (Tom Hiddleston) resumes his role as the God of Mischief in a new series that takes place after the events of “Avengers: Endgame.” Kate Herron directs and Michael Waldron. is head writer. Debuts on Disney+ next year—2021.”
While the synopsis reveals that the series will take place after Avengers: Endgame, time travel will be involved in Loki. The first image from Loki teased the character in the year 1975, with a movie theater banner for Jaws hanging in the background. The recent Super Bowl ad for Disney+ also revealed Loki in a TVA jumpsuit, which stands for Time Variance Authority in the comics. While it hasn’t been confirmed, it’s possible that Loki’s mayhem in his series may tie into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and even explain what is going on in WandaVision.
A lot is still unknown about the series at this point, but Loki is currently in pre-production, so Marvel and Hiddleston will likely keep fans in the loop on developments to help anticipation grow. That being said, fans have to wait a bit longer since The Falcon and the Winter Solider and WandaVision will come out before Loki. The above synopsis may not seem like much, but it does confirm that Loki will return to the character’s evil side, rather than the heroic side that has been seen in his last few movies. Loki will be available for streaming on Disney+ in early 2021.
