The Loki Disney+ TV series will see the Trickster God go up against dangerous new foes. The time travel plot in Avengers: Endgame saw the heroes unwittingly create an alternate timeline in which Loki escaped Earth in 2012 with the Tesseract. By all accounts, Loki will learn how to use the Tesseract to travel through time, and will interfere in events throughout human history.

So far, most attention has been focused on just how the Loki Disney+ series fits into the MCU. There have been reports that the show will end with Loki jumping from one timeline to another, emerging in the mainstream MCU - and bringing both the Tesseract and an alternate version of Mjolnir with him. That’s expected to neatly set up Thor 4, where Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster will lift Mjolnir to become the Mighty Thor.

In a recent interview with MTV News, Tom Hiddleston hinted that there’ll be more to the story than just how Loki gets back into the MCU timeline. “You’ve got his very specific gifts,” Hiddleston noted. “His intelligence, his treachery, his mischief, his magic, and then seeing him come up against more formidable opponents, the like of which he has never seen or known.”

Hiddleston implied that the challenges facing Loki will have a profound impact on his character. In the normal timeline, Loki walked a path of redemption that came to a satisfying conclusion in Avengers: Infinity War. There, he called himself a son of Odin, and died after making an ill-planned attempt on Thanos’ life. But Loki will star a version of the Trickster God who escapes from the Avengers defeated but relatively unscathed, armed with the Tesseract, and he won’t have the time of self-reflection that was fundamental to the redemption arc. That means this version of Loki could follow a very different arc indeed.

It’s fascinating to consider who these “more formidable opponents” could actually be. The first image from the Loki series suggested that he would visit 1975, but all indications are that he’ll visit a number of other times as well, interfering in human history. That presumably means his opponents exist in different time-zones as well. If that’s the case, they could be time travelers, meaning Loki isn’t the only one attempting to rewrite the past. Alternatively, Loki could actually be facing another race of near-immortal beings, and he uses time travel to his advantage in order to undermine them. In the comics, the Asgardians are only one of the many Pantheons to have interacted with humanity; Loki could also conceivably go up against some members of the Eternals, who will make their MCU debut on the big screen next year. The Loki Disney+ TV series is due to start production early next year, so hopefully it won’t be long before casting information begins to break online.
