Frodo Baggins from The Lord of the Rings is the main hero and protagonist of the story. As a Hobbit, he makes quite the unlikely hero as he goes through the harrowing journey of getting rid of the One Ring. Frodo is someone who comes from a family that is known for being rather adventurous for Hobbits, but even he could never have imagined the journey he ends up going on.
While he’s a hero, in many ways he’s also a tragic figure as carrying the ring and everything he goes through ends up leaving him scarred in many ways. We’ve collected a list of the ten best Frodo Baggins quotes from the series.
“I WISH THE RING HAD NEVER COME TO ME. I WISH NONE OF THIS HAD HAPPENED.”
This line is one that Frodo tells Gandalf while they are in Moria. He laments the task that has been given to him and how difficult it is, and it’s hard to really blame him. Many of us in our own struggles, even when they’re a lot less intense than Frodo’s, feel this way at times.
Luckily, Gandalf is there to remind him that while things might be difficult, Frodo has to face what’s ahead and all he can do is make the best of it and focus on being a good person.
“IT IS USELESS TO MEET REVENGE WITH REVENGE: IT WILL HEAL NOTHING.”
This is a quote that Frodo says in the books, not in the movies, but it’s also one of his wisest quotes. This line has a lot of wisdom in it as it reminds us all that revenge isn’t the way to handle problems.
Even if someone else has been vengeful and cruel, meeting them on their level will only drag you down. It also won’t cause any of the healing that you would want. This is definitely one of Frodo’s best quotes to remember and try to live by.
“I FEEL THAT AS LONG AS THE SHIRE LIES BEHIND, SAFE AND COMFORTABLE, I SHALL FIND WANDER MORE BEARABLE.”
For Frodo, going on the journey with the ring is one that he realizes will likely change him forever. In the book version of The Fellowship of the Ring, Frodo talks about how he has often wished to leave the Shire.
But, now that dark things are at the Shire’s door, he wishes for its safety even though he found it quite dull before. He continues by saying, “I shall know that somewhere there is a firm foothold, even if my feet cannot stand there again.”
“DO NOT BE TOO SAD, SAM. YOU CANNOT ALWAYS BE TORN IN TWO.”
The relationship between Frodo and Sam is one of the core aspects of the series and one of the most powerful, emotional things in the story. When Frodo leaves the Shire to journey to the Grey Havens since he was a ringbearer, Sam is devastated at having to say goodbye.
Frodo shows that he cares deeply about Sam’s well-being and tells Sam that it’s not his time to leave Middle-Earth and how with Frodo gone he can focus on moving forward with his life and healing.
“YOU’RE LATE.”
This is one of the first lines fans heard Frodo speak in The Lord of the Rings films. He says this line to Gandalf when he arrives in the Shire for Bilbo’s birthday party. Frodo gently chides him for being late, but he’s clearly thrilled to see Gandalf.
The happy meeting between them is very endearing, even if Gandalf insists that he’s not late at all. It’s also rather tragic thinking about how relatively carefree Frodo was and how the Ring changes him.
“I AM NAKED IN THE DARK, SAM, AND THERE IS NO VEIL BETWEEN ME AND THE WHEEL OF FIRE.
Frodo’s journey to destroy the ring gets more and more difficult as the power of the Ring impacts him more and more. After the Ring is destroyed, Frodo still feels its effects. As Sam is there holding him as Mount Doom erupts around them, Frodo emotionally talks about how all he feels is the darkness.
He says that “No taste of food, no feel of water, no sound of wind, no memory of tree or grass or flower, no image of moon or star are left to me.” This is a rather dark quote, but thankfully, he has Sam to give him hope.
“I’M GLAD TO BE WITH YOU, SAMWISE GAMGEE, HERE AT THE END OF ALL THINGS.”
This is another quote that Frodo says to Sam as it looks like they are about to die on Mount Doom. This is a rather heartwarming quote even as everything about it is tinged with sorrow.
Sam is really the person that got him through everything, and Frodo shows how much Sam means to him when he expresses this emotion. While they might be about to die, at least they aren’t there alone.
“THERE IS NO REAL GOING BACK.”
Frodo realizes soon after returning to the Shire that he will never be able to lead a life of peace there. The trauma of what happened during his journey is too much for him to live a normal life.
This is a poignant thing as it’s clearly a parallel between real victims of war and how PTSD and trauma impact people for years afterward. This is definitely one of the most tragic things about Frodo’s journey.
“FRODO WOULDN’T HAVE GOT FAR WITHOUT SAM, WOULD HE?”
Frodo says this line, couched as a rhetorical question, to Sam at the end of The Two Towers. Sam is talking to Frodo about how he wonders if their journey will be turned into a story that is told to children. Frodo adds how important Sam was to the journey, and then he assures Sam that he is being quite serious.
This is a somewhat lighthearted moment between them, but it’s also really emotional and shows once again the importance of Sam to Frodo.
“I WILL TAKE THE RING THOUGH I DO NOT KNOW THE WAY.”
This is one of Frodo’s most powerful moments in the series. During the Council of Elrond, Frodo volunteers to continue taking the ring to Mordor. This is extremely brave and courageous of him, and it shows his true character.
He can tell that he’s the only one that is able to carry this burden and have a chance of succeeding, but he’s clearly sacred which is where his true courage lies.
