While Frodo might technically be the main character of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Aragorn is a close second. His journey in the movies from a Ranger of the North to fulfilling his destiny as the King of Gondor is extremely compelling.

The way that Viggo Mortensen brought the character to life captivated generations of fans of the series and convinced newcomers to wholeheartedly love with the stoic ranger. He’s a great warrior, a compassionate person, and full of wisdom while still being quite rugged. Here are the ten most inspiring Aragorn quotes from The Lord of the Rings.

“I WOULD HAVE GONE WITH YOU TO THE END, INTO THE VERY FIRES OF MORDOR.”

After the Uruk Hai reach the Fellowship at Amon Hen, Frodo decides he needs to take the ring to Mordor by himself. Seeing how the Ring impacts Boromir forces him to make this decision. Aragorn sees what he intends to do, and he accepts his decision.

However, he shows that he was always about loyalty to Frodo and that he would have stuck things through to the very end with this quote. This proves just how loyal of a person he is.

“NOT IF WE HOLD TRUE TO EACH OTHER.”

After the events of Amon Hen, the Fellowship is torn apart. Frodo and Sam leave by themselves to Mordor. Boromir dies redeeming himself, and Merry and Pippin are taken captive. This leaves Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli alone to decide what to do.

When Gimli laments that the Fellowship has failed it mission, Aragorn responds with this line. He then continues by saying that they will go after Merry and Pippin to try and rescue them. This is another example of the courage that Aragorn has.

“I THOUGHT I HAD WANDERED INTO A DREAM.”

The relationship between Aragorn and Arwen is the romantic crux of the trilogy. While it’s not a huge part of the movies, it does provide many emotional moments and romance that fans should root for.

Aragorn says this line to Arwen when she asks him if he remembers how they first met. They have a conversation about their relationship and how Arwen is willing to give up her immortality to him. It’s clear that Aragorn loves her a lot and is very torn up about her wanting to do this.

“I WILL NOT LET THE WHITE CITY FALL. NOR OUR PEOPLE FAIL.”

This is another extremely emotional moment from the films. When Boromir is dying on the ground and full of arrows, Aragorn runs across him. While these two have had their issues, given that Aragorn is the heir to the throne of Gondor, this moment shows that they do see each other as brothers.

Aragorn makes a promise to Boromir in this moment, and he intends to see it through. Seeing him fulfill this promise in the movies is definitely rewarding.

“FOR FRODO.”

One of the best things about Aragorn is that he has a very regal nature. While he might seem somewhat grainy and rugged in appearance when we first meet him, his true nature is what makes him fit to be a good king.

When the rest of the Fellowship and the armies of men arrive at the Black Gate to try and give Frodo and Sam a fighting chance, Aragorn says this short but emotional line. It’s clear that he still takes his responsibility to help Frodo seriously.

“IF BY MY LIFE OR DEATH I CAN PROTECT YOU, I WILL. YOU HAVE MY SWORD.”

When the Fellowship of the Ring is first formed, Aragorn is one of the first to offer his support and help to Frodo by offering his skills and life.

This goes to show that he is committed to the cause of good. He has already gotten to know Frodo after helping him make it to Rivendell, and he clearly already feels a sense of loyalty to him.

“I DO NOT FEAR DEATH.”

One of the reasons that fans love Aragorn so much is that he is an extremely strong person. He definitely has a quiet strength about him, and he shows this inner strength in many ways.

While he might be physically strong, his strength of character is even more compelling. In The Return of the Kingwhen Aragorn decides to take the Paths of the Dead, he says this line very seriously and dramatically.

“MY FRIENDS, YOU BOW TO NO ONE.”

This is another moment that shows Aragorn’s true nature. During his coronation as king in Minas Tirith, the crowd is bowing to him as he goes through it. Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin also beginning to bow to him, but he isn’t here for that.

He understands that they have done just as much as he has. He instead bows to them and gets everyone else in the crowd to follow suit. This shows that while he might be king and extremely powerful, he still is quite humble.

“IT IS NOT THIS DAY.”

This is one of the most amusing moments from the entire series. Aragorn says this line as part of his speech to the armies at the Battle of Pelennor Fields. This speech that he gives inspires the soldiers to rally and charge into battle.

The beginning of the quote goes, “A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship. But it is not this day.” This line and speech are definitely one of the most inspiring from the entire series.

“THERE IS ALWAYS HOPE.”

Aragorn says this line to a young man before the Battle of Helm’s Deep, and it’s a great line that can also apply to many other life situations.

Before the battle, this young man is scared about what’s going to happen, and he says that everyone has told him that there’s no hope of them winning. Aragorn inspires him and gives him encouragement to keep fighting.
