A Knights of the Old Republic project is in the works at Lucasfilm that could serve as the next movie franchise for Star Wars. Disney and Lucasfilm have successfully brought back the galaxy far, far away over the last few years, but with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hitting theaters this year, the future on the big screen is not yet confirmed. We do know that Star Wars 9 will be the end of the Skywalker Saga though, but it won’t be the final Star Wars film.

Lucasfilm experimented with standalone projectsm but appear to have completely abandoned the concept for the time being, as the focus of the future has shifted to two different trilogies. The first to be announced was for Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson, which will give him a blank slate to work with inside of the larger universe. The second trilogy is being developed by Game of Thrones co-creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Details about both trilogies have been almost impossible to come by, but we do know that all three of the creators are working together to help figure out the next decade of Star Wars movies.

There were no new movies announced at Star Wars Celebration, which just wrapped up in Chicago, but Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy came close during an interview with MTV. She was asked specifically if anything Knights of the Old Republic related was in development and confirmed that there is. Kennedy stopped short of specifying what type of project this could be, but she may have confirmed that this project will be a movie - if it does happen. During her answer, she discussed the future of the Star Wars movie slate and unlikelihood of multiple movies coming out every year, so her mentioning this in the same breath as a Knights of the Old Republic project may indicate that this is a potential film franchise. Here’s her quote:

Now that Kennedy has confirmed that Knights of the Old Republic is something they are developing - and may be a movie - it may lend further credence to the recent report that Benioff and Weiss’ trilogy of films would be set during this time. The basis of the original popular video game series takes the galaxy thousands of years before the films, but the rumors about the possible Benioff and Weiss adaptation shortens this time frame down to just a couple hundred years. Unfortunately, Kennedy didn’t share any additional details about what aspects of Old Republic would be included in any such adaptation, so fans of the games may only see a loose adaptation of the story on the big screen instead of a literal one.

You know, we talk about that all the time. Yes, we are developing something to look at. Right now I have no idea where things might fall, but we have to be careful that there is a cadence to Star Wars that doesn’t start to feel like too much. We don’t have a crystal ball, you know. We tried a little bit with Solo [A Star Wars Story] to see if we could do two movies a year and whether or not there was really an opportunity for that and we felt that’s not going to work so we backed off that a little bit. But it doesn’t mean we don’t think about lots of different stories because that’s the exciting thing about this universe.

If Benioff & Weiss’ trilogy of Star Wars films is indeed tackling this period of time in a galaxy far, far away, it could be the latest Old Republic content that fans receive. It was recently announced that Star Wars: The Old Republic, the followup game to Knights of the Old Republic, is getting a new expansion pack. If Lucasfilm is gearing up for a brand new movie franchise to be set around this same time, this could explain why The Old Republic is suddenly being given new life as a means to further increase knowledge and excitement about a future movie announcement. However, a Knights of the Old Republic project is just in development at this point, so we’ll have to wait for more updates before getting excited about a possible new movie franchise.
