The success of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story means that the Star Wars spinoff films are only getting started. Star Wars Celebration Orlando is in full swing right now, with this year’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi being one of the highlights of the event. We now not only have an official teaser poster for The Last Jedi, but following its premiere during the movie’s Star Wars Celebration panel, The Last Jedi teaser trailer is online now too. Anticipation for the followup to 2015’s successful Star Wars: The Force Awakens is quite high, to say the least.
Last year, Rogue One was also a massive hit for Lucasfilm and proved to the world that a Star Wars movie could perform well, without being part of the franchise’s central narrative. Moving forward, The Last Jedi will be followed by a Han Solo spinoff film in 2018 and an unknown spinoff/anthology movie in 2020. Of course, these side stories weren’t always a guarantee.
Speaking during The Last Jedi panel, Kennedy stated that the reception by fans and the success worldwide of Rogue One gave her and Lucasfilm “more confidence” to move ahead with more Star Wars spinoff films. Many are expecting that the 2020 Star Wars spinoff/anthology movie will be announced during this year’s Celebration, further supporting Kennedy’s comments on the future of these spinoff films set in the galaxy far, far away.
Even before we speculate on the future of the Star Wars anthology films, however, there’s still a lot we don’t yet know about the Han Solo movie. It doesn’t yet have an official title, and much of the plot is still unknown. There’s been rumors that footage from the film so far will be shown at Celebration this year. If so, it may pop up online. More likely is that the title of the movie will be revealed, possibly hinting at some of the plot.
While Han’s early adventures will likely include him meeting a young Lando (Donald Glover) and winning the Millennium Falcon, there will likely be more of a deep dive into his upbringing and a spotlight shown on some of the unknown characters he met during his journeys. Much is still unknown about Woody Harrelson’s character, and virtually nothing about who Emilia Clarke will play has been revealed. As we await new information on the Han Solo film and the other spinoffs/anthology films, stay tuned for all things Star Wars.
