Update: Luke Perry has died at the age of 52.
Luke Perry reportedly suffers a “massive” stroke and is currently hospitalized in Los Angeles, California. The actor is currently starring on The CW’s Archie Comics adaptation, Riverdale, as Fred Andrews, the father of lead character Archie Andrews (KJ Apa). However, Perry got his big break in the 90s by starring in the teen TV drama Beverly Hills, 90210 as Dylan McKay.
In the years since Beverly Hills, 90210, Perry has had a long and successful career on both television and in film. His most recent high profile role is on The CW’s wildly popular Riverdale, which kicked off early in 2017. In addition to starring in the current third season of Riverdale, Perry is set to appear in Quentin Tarantino’s Manson Family murders drama, Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, which opens this summer. Further, Perry is expected to reprise his role in the recently announced Beverly Hills, 90210 revival at FOX.
Now, TMZ is reporting that Perry suffered a “massive” stroke on the morning of Thursday, Feb. 28 and was taken to the hospital by paramedics. Perry’s representatives confirmed to Variety that the actor “is currently under observation at the hospital.” Neither The CW nor Warner Bros. Television, which produces Riverdale, responded to Variety’s request for comment.
UPDATE 3:27 pm ET - TMZ reports Perry has been placed in a medically induced coma, however the actor’s representatives say that’s not true, he’s been sedated.
The CW’s Riverdale returned from a break last night with episode 13 of season 3, which is currently exploring a supernatural-tinged mystery surrounding the Gargoyle King and the related game, Griffins and Gargoyles, which has connections to both the current teens and their parents. The CW renewed Riverdale for season 4 earlier this winter, with the show expected to return Fall 2019 and - barring any major narrative shake-ups - see the return of the main cast members, including Perry as Fred Andrews.
In addition to Riverdale and Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, the latter of which is currently in post-production ahead of its June release date, Perry was recently announced to appear in FOX’s Beverly Hills, 90210 revival. The six-episode event series was officially announced yesterday following months of speculation and reports. The 90210 reboot was first reported in December 2018 with the original cast on board, though rumors started circulating as far back as 2017. When announced, the 90210 revival was expected to air this summer on FOX, with filming presumably set to begin soon.
As of now, though, it’s unclear how Perry’s hospitalization will affect the Beverly Hills, 90210 revival or the remainder of Riverdale season 3 as well as the confirmed season 4, if at all. Until more information about Perry’s health is made available, it’s impossible to tell whether his hospitalization will affect his upcoming projects. For now, fans of Perry are no doubt keeping the actor in their thoughts as they hope for a speedy recovery.
