Paramount and Hasbro’s M.A.S.K. movie is moving forward as it recruits the writer of Bad Boys for Life. Based on the toyline that launched in 1985, the Mobile Armored Strike Kommand team is a mix of G.I. Joe and Transformers and became quite popular as a result. After also receiving an animated TV series at that time, M.A.S.K. is now in development to go to the big screen. Paramount hired F. Gary Gray to direct the film in 2018, as their plans for a Hasbro cinematic universe were in the early stages, but there hasn’t been much movement on it lately.
Now, THR reports that the live-action M.A.S.K. movie is making progress and has found its writer. Chris Bremner has been hired to work on the script after most recently co-writing Bad Boys for Life. This report did not reveal any details as to what Bremner’s take on the toy-based movie entails. However, it was mentioned when F. Gary Gray joined the film that he and the studios were searching for a writer who could deliver “a contemporary subculture movie with a youth empowerment angle,” and Bremner appears to be the choice.
With not a lot of information released so far on M.A.S.K., it is unclear at this juncture if the movie is planned to connect to other Hasbro films. Paramount and Hasbro just wrapped filming on the G.I. Joe spinoff movie Snake Eyes starring Henry Golding, which could potentially be used in a connected universe down the road. As for Bremner, this is the latest project to be added to his plate as he’s also currently writing National Treasure 3 for Disney and is attached to do Bad Boys 4 at Sony.
The main story for M.A.S.K. follows an elite strike force that fought crime and terrorism, with the primary threat being an organization known as V.E.N.O.M. (Vicious Evil Network of Mayhem). The toys had the tagline of “Illusion is the ultimate weapon,” but that is not yet confirmed to be the M.A.S.K. movie’s tagline as well.
