Rapper Mac Miller’s family revealed that they will be releasing a posthumous album of the musicians’ unfinished music. The album, titled Circles will be released one year after his untimely death.

Miller was found dead at the age of 26 in his home in San Fernando Valley on September 7th, 2019. His death occurred just one month after the release of his acclaimed fifth studio album, Swimming. The cause of death was later determined to be due to mixed drug toxicity. He had cocaine, fentanyl, and alcohol in his system. One year later, in September 2019, three men were charged for allegedly supplying the Grammy nominee with laced pills.

On January 8th, Miller’s family posted a photo to his official Instagram account revealing a final surprise. His family began the post, “Here we are. The act of having to write this at all feels surreal. At the time of his passing, Malcolm was well into the process of recording his companion album to Swimming, entitled Circles.” They revealed that the concept of Miller’s two albums were the fact that they are “Two different styles complementing each other, completing a circle - Swimming in Circles was the concept.” The statement revealed that Miller had been working alongside singer-songwriter and producer Jon Brion pn his music prior to his death. The post explained that “after hearing some early versions of songs, [Jon] cleared his calendar to help Malcolm fine-tune them.” The full statement from Miller’s family can be read below:

Miller’s family revealed that while completing Miller’s second album was “a complicated process” with “no clear path,” they thought it was “important to [him] for the world to hear it.” They revealed that they didn’t know the correct way of letting the fans know about the posthumous album and how to “communicate meaningfully while keeping sacred what should be kept sacred.” They figured the best way to do it was to post this only post to let Miller’s fans know the information needed so that they can move to a second Instagram account, they revealed, “Information regarding the release, his charity, and Malcolm himself will be found at @92tilinfinity.” They concluded the post, writing, “We miss him. We are left to imagine where Malcolm was going and to appreciate where he was. We hope you take the time to listen. The look on his face when everyone was listening said it all. With humility and gratitude, Malcolm’s family.”

It’s definitely a strange feeling to have an artist who has been dead for over a year come out with more music. Fans are commenting their gratitude to the family for doing this for Miller and for them.
